4 Times Cruise Ships Rescued People (and their pet!)

Cruising offers a blend of comfort and adventure, allowing travelers to experience the world from a unique perspective. These floating cities provide relaxation and opportunities for discovery as they journey across the seas.

1. Carnival’s Unexpected Detour

On May 24th, 2024, the Carnival Radiance altered its course to assist in a rescue mission. While en route to Ensenada, Mexico, the ship responded to a U.S. Coast Guard call about a stranded boat with 25 individuals, including children.

An Air Force C-130 located the vessel, and the Carnival Radiance was redirected to help. The crew brought the stranded group aboard, providing food and medical support. They coordinated with the Coast Guard for a safe handover of the rescued individuals.

This incident demonstrates how cruise ships can play a role in rescue operations, showcasing the readiness of cruise staff in unexpected situations.

2. Disney Treasure’s Oceanic Rescue

The Disney Treasure assisted in rescuing a family of four from a sinking catamaran in the Bermuda Triangle in October 2024. The U.S. Coast Guard called upon the ship, which was en route from the Netherlands to Port Canaveral, Florida.

The family’s vessel was taking on water due to a gasket failure. The Disney Treasure, positioned about 80 miles away, launched a small rescue boat to bring the family to safety.

"We were very grateful for them to change their course and head up to help these people," said U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Mike Rauch.

Captain Marco Nogara expressed satisfaction in providing aid, emphasizing the crew’s expertise and commitment to safety. This event highlights cruise ships’ capacity to offer life-saving support while at sea.

3. Voyager of the Seas Rescues Stranded Family and Their Loyal Pup

Voyager of the Seas carried out a daring and compassionate rescue mission off the coast of Morocco, bringing six stranded individuals and a black Labrador to safety.

The disabled sailboat had lost its masts and was experiencing engine failure, leaving its occupants adrift at sea. Despite efforts, Voyager’s crew was unable to repair the vessel, prompting them to bring the four adults, two children, and their dog aboard.

The rescue operation was executed with precision, as crew members utilized a lifeboat to transfer the stranded passengers safely. Photos captured by passengers showed the rescued sailors huddled together, with their loyal dog wearing a pink life jacket, a testament to the urgency and care involved in the operation.

After ensuring their well-being, the ship resumed its journey at 17 knots toward Gran Canaria, where the rescued individuals would receive further assistance upon arrival.

This remarkable event highlights the professionalism and preparedness of cruise ship crews, who are trained to handle emergency situations at sea. While Voyager of the Seas continued on its transatlantic voyage, this incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of ocean travel and the importance of maritime rescue operations.

4. Odyssey Rescues 77 Migrants Off Coast of Greece

During a 7-night Greek Isles cruise, Royal Caribbeanโ€™s Odyssey of the Seas rescued 77 migrants from an overcrowded sailboat in the Ionian Sea.

Greek authorities alerted the ship after a passing Maltese cargo vessel spotted the distressed boat, approximately 129 miles southwest of Pylos. Odyssey’s crew coordinated with Greeceโ€™s search and rescue team to transfer the migrants safely to Kalamata, a major Greek port, which led to the cancellation of the shipโ€™s scheduled stop in Santorini.

Authorities have not disclosed details regarding missing passengers or the migrants’ nationalities, but the incident reflects the ongoing humanitarian crisis as many attempt to reach the EU by sea. Social media videos captured the moment Odyssey’s crew carefully guided the passengersโ€”some carrying infantsโ€”onto the shipโ€™s lifeboat, showcasing the professionalism and preparedness of the cruise staff.
