Norwegian Epic Breaks Loose in Sicily, Sends Two Guests Into the Water

Iโ€™ve seen my fair share of unexpected moments at sea, but what happened during Norwegian Epicโ€™s port call was the kind of chaos that turns an ordinary day ashore into something unforgettable.

It all unfolded just after 1 p.m. local time. Norwegian Epic, a 155,873-ton floating resort that can carry over 4,000 guests, was securely mooredโ€”or so everyone thought. Passengers were making their way back onboard when strong winds swept across the Sicilian port, bringing with them an unnerving series of loud cracks.

According to eyewitnesses, mooring lines began to snap one by one. Concrete bollards were yanked clean out of the pier and sent flying toward the shipโ€™s hull. In the middle of this, a female passenger fell from the gangway into the harbor. Her husband, without hesitation, jumped in after her.

Both were pulled from the water by quick-acting crew and local responders. Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed the couple sustained only minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital as a precaution.

Wind Warnings and Infrastructure Woes

The Italian meteorological service had issued a wind warning earlier that day, with gusts reaching up to 92 km/h (around 57 mph). It wasnโ€™t just the wind causing troubleโ€”it looks like the dock infrastructure itself may have been unable to handle the strain. An investigation is now underway to determine exactly what went wrong, but early signs point to a dangerous mix of mechanical stress and weather instability.

After the moorings failed, Norwegian Epic briefly drifted away from the dock before regaining control. With the ship temporarily out of position, reboarding was suspended. Guests returning from shore excursions found themselves stranded for hours under the sun.

Delays, Frustrations, and A Long Wait to Get Back Onboard

At first, passengers were told they might be able to reboard by late afternoon. But it wasnโ€™t until 7:15 p.m.โ€”more than six hours after the initial incidentโ€”that reboarding resumed. Video from social media showed massive crowds and long lines, with many guests sharing their frustration about the lack of updates and provisions while they waited.

To their credit, Norwegian Cruise Line later emphasized that crew were assisting guests throughout the delay and reiterated that safety remains their top priority. I can attestโ€”situations like this are rare, but when they do happen, the professionalism of the crew is what makes all the difference.

Still On Schedule

Despite the disruption in Catania, Norwegian Epic kept to its itinerary. The ship departed that evening for Naples, with subsequent calls scheduled in Livorno and Cannes before the cruise ends in Civitavecchia (Rome) on June 3.

While mooring line failures aren’t unheard ofโ€”Holland Americaโ€™s Rotterdam experienced a similar issue earlier this yearโ€”this incident stands out because of the guest injuries and the dramatic visuals captured at the port.

As for Norwegian Epic, sheโ€™s back on course, but I imagine the guests (and crew) wonโ€™t forget this stop in Sicily any time soon.
